About the Client

Social Venture Partners Minnesota (SVP/MN) is a not-for-profit entrepreneurial organization that leverages the money and expertise of its members to promote philanthropy and improve the lives of ‘at risk’ youth. It is part of an international network of engaged philanthropists who are applying a venture capital approach to their giving. The SVP network has “cumulatively invested more than $32.2 million in 335 nonprofits since 1997.”

About the Project

An accurate Social Return on Investment (SROI) is difficult to achieve and is often notoriously expensive to conduct. SVP/MN needed a rigorous, comprehensive SROI solution that fit the needs of cost-conscious, small non-profit organizations. Altruitive developed a proprietary SROI methodology to (1) critically evaluate SVP/MN’s new investment opportunities and (2) measure the social performance of its current non-profit investees.

Deliverables

  • SROI methodology, including roles and responsibilities and a number of analytical tools
  • SROI case study of one SVP/MN investee using the methodology
  • Recommendations for the use and communication of SROI with SVP investees, partners, and funders
